The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is only 16 days away so it’s time to collect the best athletes who can shine at the Games. First we take a look at the top Asian female athletes. Like tennis superstar Naomi Osaka, Indian badminton player Pusarla V. Sindhu or Hong Kong track cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze. They all have a real chance of winning an Olympic medal just like the next athletes mentioned below.
The Asian continent will host the Olympic Games for the eighth time, providing great opportunities for Asian athletes to perform well. Beside the Chinese athletes, who always achieve good results, the Japanese team can do extremely well on home soil. But beside the two big Asian nations, there are great talents in smaller countries too. Even if it’s not easy for women to compete in several places, the next few athletes can achieve great results in the Games. And hopefully motivate the next generation to follow them and choose a sporting career.
Osaka and Shimizu in top Asian female athletes
We’ve already mentioned the next two Japanese female athletes in our previous article but we can’t miss them from this list either. As the world No 2 Naomi Osaka is one of the most famous Asian female athletes who can also win the gold medal in the Olympics. In spite of her recent withdrawals from the French Open and Wimbledon, the 23-year old athlete is the top favorite to win on home soil. Online sportsbooks in Japan offer the odds of 2.775 for her victory. Her compatriot, Kiyou Shimizu is simply called the queen of karate in Japan. The two-time world champion can make history and win the first Olympic gold in the sport, which makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo.
Big Chinese favorites for gold in table tennis, athletics, diving, weightlifting
It’s difficult to choose from the several Chinese champions who all belong to the top Asian female athletes. Chinese women won 14 gold medals out of the 27 in the previous Olympic Games in Rio. Some sports like table tennis or taekwondo are traditionally successful sports in the country. But the victory of the Chinese women’s volleyball team was a surprise even at home. Unlike the Chinese victory in the women’s table tennis singles where the current world No1 and 2, Chen Meng and Sun Yingsha will try to win the gold this time.
Gong Lijiao is a huge favorite to win the gold in the women’s shot put after winning the World Championship in Doha two years ago. Another gold in the 20km women’s walk is also very likely. After China took the gold and the bronze medals five years ago. Shi Tingmao, the 29-year-old diver has won every major title in the sport. She is a two-time Olympic champion and 8-time world champion. So no wonder that Tingmao is the top favorite to win the gold in 3m. The weightlifter Deng Wei would have been in the same position but she won’t compete this time due to an injury. Fans can still expect Chinese gold in this sport as well. From athletes like Li Wenwen who is the world record holder in super-heavyweight.
Sindhu can win a gold for India
Moving to another highly populated country, India we find Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, one of the most popular female athletes there. The 25-year-old badminton player has become the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal. After she won the silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She could even top this result two years ago. When Sindhu won the World Championship and became the first Indian woman to win a gold in badminton. Now she will aim to win the gold in Tokyo. With online gambling sites in Japan mentioning her in the top favorites. Even though she had a mixed year so far, with early exits from some opens. But with her experience and previous results Sindhu can fight for the gold for sure.
South Korean top golfers going for gold
As you can already read about them in our LPGA Tour previews, South Korean women golfers belong to the very best players. One of them, Inbee Park, won the last Olympics in Rio. And she will compete in the Games again. Just like the word No1 Jin-Young Ko who has just won her first LPGA Tour title of the year. And world No4 Sei Young Kim who finished T3 in the 2021 ANA Inspiration. But we also have to mention the Thai golfer, Patty Tavatanakit who won her first major title in this year’s ANA Inspiration. She is likely to be joined in the Thai team by the Jutanugarn sisters. Two-time major winner Ariya and LPGA Tour winner Moriya. Who can all get a great result for their countries in Tokyo.
Indonesian climber Aries Susanti is also world famous
Climbing will also make its debut in the Olympic program this year, but sadly without one of the top women climbers, Indonesian Aries Susanti. She is a 4-time World Cup winner in speed climbing and the 2018 Asian Games champion. Susanti was also the world record holder. And the first woman to climb a speed wall in less than seven seconds. Her performance earned her the nickname, Spiderwoman, and made her popular in all Asia. But after failing to qualify for the Games, Japanese women climbers can fight for a medal now against the European favorites.
Sarah Lee Wai-sze is Hong Kong’s best hope for a medal
Sarah Lee Wai-sze won the bronze medal in the women’s keirin in the 2012 London Olympics. Making her the third athlete to win an Olympic medal for Hong Kong. The 34-year-old cyclist seems to be in good form after winning a gold and a silver medal in this year’s Nations Cup. Wai-sze is Hong Kong’s best hope for another Olympic medal and surely she will do everything for another podium finish in her last Olympic appearance.
