  • 2021 La Fleche Wallonne is held this week, 21st of April
  • It is the second event of the Ardennes Classics
  • Julian Alaphilippe and Primoz Roglic are the top favorites to win the one-day race

The one-day classic of La Fleche Wallone is held this week, on the 21st of April starting from the city of Charleroi. Belgian top cyclist Wout van Aert won’t compete but other top cyclists, like Primoz Roglic, Julian Alaphilippe and Tadej Pogacar will. They are all mentioned in the 2021 La Fleche Wallonne predictions with a chance to win the race. Just like the winner of the previous race in 2020, Marc Hirschi.

Following the Amstel Gold Race we have another famous one-day classic in the UCI World Tour calendar. The second race of the Ardennes Classics, the La Fleche Wallone which has been organized since 1936. This year the event will start from Charleroi and finish at the top of Mur. The steep hill which riders have to climb three times during the 192km long route. All 19 UCI World Tour teams will compete along with six UCI ProTeams. In the previous winners we can find Alejandro Valverde who has won the race a record five times. But the current world champion, Julian Alaphilippe has also won here twice and belongs to the top favorites this year again.

2021 La Fleche Wallonne predictions favor two-time winner Alaphilippe

Julian Alaphilippe has won this event twice before, in 2018 and 2019 which makes him the second most successful, still active rider. He skipped the event last year but he is back now as the current world champion. Online sportsbooks in Belgium favor him to win the race this Wednesday with the odds of 3.75. Even though this season the French hasn’t been as convincing as last year. Alaphilippe won a stage in the Tirreno-Adriatico, finished second in the Strade Bianche and 6th in the Amstel Gold Race last weekend. The Quick-Step rider can get back to winning now in his preferred race.

Primoz Roglic has been in great form this season in spite of being involved in some very unlucky crashes. He won the 2021 Tour of Basque and three stages in the Paris-Nice race along with the points classification. The two-time Vuelta winner will try to add another Ardennes classic to his trophy list following his victory at the 2020 Liege-Baston-Liege. The Slovenian Jumbo-Visma rider has the odds of 4.20 now in the 2021 La Fleche Wallonne predictions.

Pidcock, Pogacar and former winners’ chances

Online gambling sites in Belgium mention two top young riders in the favorites, Tom Pidcock and Tadej Pogacar. Pidcock was close to winning last weekend when he finished as a runner-up behind van Aert in the Amstel Gold Race. The 22-year-old Ineos rider seems to be very strong in tough terrains and has already won the one-day race of Brabantse Pijl last week. He also got a third-place finish from Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and the odds of 6.50 to win now.

The other young star, Pogacar started the season superbly after winning the UAE Tour and the Tirreno-Adriatico. But he wasn’t as strong in his last race, the Tour of the Basque Country. Where he finished third at the end. The 2020 Tour de France winner finished 9th in this race last year and has the odds of 7.00 to improve on that. While his teammate, Marc Hirschi can try to defend his title from 2020. The Swiss rider surprised everyone with his victory last September but he isn’t in such form now following his injury. Unlike veteran Alejando Valverde, who won the 2021 GP Miguel Indurain and finished fifth in the Amstel Gold Race.  The Spanish cyclist won the Fleche Wallonne five times so far. His odds to get his sixth victory now are 13.00 on bet365.
