They have delayed the start of the season but not reduced the length. Teams face a long haul through all twenty-three races and the odds on F1 in 2021 just got a nudge. Sure, Mercedes are still favorites at online sportsbook sites in the UK like Bet365. That was never in doubt. But driver changes and the aero handicap could well signpost changes to come. Although, it is perhaps the change of CEO in the higher echelons of the owners that will mean more long term.

The aero-handicap comes into force this season. This won’t have instant effect, but it does show the sport is attempting to level the playing field. Whether this slow pace can placate some of the least happy amongst the fans is debatable. Chances are Mercedes will win again comfortably, they’re still way ahead in the odds on F1 in 2021. But you can bet on F1 now changing and not attempting to fight every slight move towards progress. Not least because of Stefano Domenicali.

Chase Carey was never really going to have enough time to do justice to a busy job. He steps down in favor of a man who used to run Ferrari so knows what it’s like. Stefano has already praised Lewis Hamilton, told drivers to lead by example and admonished those who say F1 is boring. He knows he has to oversee some major changes but the odds on F1 in 2021 don’t suggest we’ll see them soon. Those in the UK gambling laws of common sense have arrived, forget it.

F1 Leadership Change Could Herald New Era

They’ve set the cost cap at $145,000,000 which sounds good. Until you realize that doesn’t cover driver pay or marketing. So, that’s meaningless. Whether Stefano can sort out that mess is another highly debatable topic. Nearly as questionable as the tire issue. The plan is to reduce downforce by 10% to stop the tires shredding themselves. That should make some of those street circuits very exciting. Will it change the odds on F1 in 2021? Well, probably not. They delayed testing too.

Pre-season testing is now barely a couple of weeks before lights out. So online bookies in the UK will have precious little notice to set their odds on F1 in 2021. The odds on Mercedes then are unlikely to shift before you bet on the Bahrain Grand Prix. Sure, you could go mad and bet on Ferrari to have pulled their finger out, but that seems unlikely. Without the sweeping changes (now delayed) there will be few backing them at online betting sites in the UK like Bet365.

Which perhaps then leaves some hope Max Verstappen and Red Bull will keep Mercedes in check. Unfortunately, those who regularly bet on Max Verstappen will spot a sudden reduction in downforce will do his cornering no good. The odds on Red Bull will probably shift if he finishes that first race. You’ll need to closely examine the odds on F1 in 2021 all the way up to the off. A bet on Mercedes will tempt the sane, the odds on Ferrari the romantics and Red Bull? That’s for the crazies.

Odds On F1 Constructors Championship

  • Williams – 1000/1
  • Alfa Romeo – 1000/1
  • Haas – 1000/1
  • McLaren – 125/1
  • Alpine – 80/1
  • Aston Martin – 66/1
  • Ferrari – 14/1
  • Red Bull – 7/2
  • Mercedes – 1/6

One thing is for sure, this season is going to push the teams, even Mercedes, to the limit. Twenty-three races is more than ever before. It’ll stress test the car’s reliabilities and the drivers’ focus. Indeed, that’s the best reason to bet on Lewis Hamilton. He’s almost unshakeable. That’s why his odds on F1 in 2021 are so short. He’s a true master who’ll barely notice these small changes. Those of us who like to bet on sports in the UK, however, may see far more effect on track.
