  • Downhill races are held this weekend in the 2021 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships
  • Suter, Johnson and Ledecka can win the women’s race in the absence of Goggia
  • Fans might see an Italian gold if Paris can defeat Swiss World Cup leader Feuz

We can expect one of the most exciting races in the downhill events this weekend in the 2021 Alpine Ski World Championships. Which is held between the 8th and 21st of February in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Three top favorites are mentioned in the 2021 FIS World Championships Downhill odds in the men’s race. While even more top skiers can win in the women’s event.

The 2021 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships should have already started. But first day’s events, the women’s alpine combined events have been postponed due to heavy snow.  Hopefully the weather will improve and let the competition continue as it was planned with the women’s downhill race being held on Saturday. Where the local’s favorite and Olympic champion Sofia Goggia would have had a big chance to win the event. Unfortunately she suffered a fracture on her right knee  after a huge accident and had to miss the championships. But the defending world champion, Slovenian Ilka Stuhec will be there. Just like Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud who is the current champion in the men’s race with small chance to defend his title.

2021 FIS World Championships Downhill odds mention several favorites in the women’s race

We can find three skiers with the same odds on online sportsbooks in Italy. Corinne Suter, Breezy Johnson and Ester Ledecka all have the odds of 4.00 to win the downhill race on Wednesday. In the absence of the World Cup leader, Sofia Goggia, any of them can win the gold medal. Swiss Corinne Suter has won the silver medal in the last world championships and the overall downhill world cup last season. She is the only athlete who could win a downhill race apart from Goggia this season. Which makes her a top favorite.

Let’s ski!

American Breezy Johnson can follow the sample of legendary skier Lindsey Vonn who won the bronze medal in 2019. Johnson is having the best season of her career so far after four podium finishes in the World Cup. She is currently in second place in the overall standing. While the Czech Olympic champion in Super G and parallel snowboard, Ester Ledecka is in fourth place in the World Cup at the moment. Maybe she is not as strong in downhill as in Super G, but she knows how to perform well in a major event. Another Swiss skier, Lara Gut is specialized in Super G too, but can achieve a great result in downhill too. She has the odds of 6.00 to win in the 2021 FIS World Championships Downhill odds.

Three big favorites in the men’s event too

Online gambling sites in Italy hope for a home victory in the men’s downhill race on Sunday. They offer the odds of 4.00 for the victory of Dominik Paris. The Italian skier is the current world champion in Super G while he finished 6th in downhill. But this season he is skiing better in the latter. After winning one world cup race and getting another podium finish. He is currently in 3rd place in the overall standing, but he has a massive deficit to the leader, Swiss Beat Feuz.

The 3-time world cup winner is on his way to his fourth downhill title after winning two races in Kitzbuhel. He also won a gold and a bronze in the previous world championships beside a bronze in the 2018 Olympics. While Austrian Matthias Mayer has won the gold in the 2014 Games in Sochi. The 30-year old skier is currently in second place in the world cup after one victory and three more podium finishes. He hasn’t got any medal from the world championships but has the odds of 5.00 to make up for it with a gold. His compatriot, Vincent Kriechmayr got the bronze in 2019 but his main focus is the Super G. Where he leads the World Cup and has the bigger chance to win a world title too.
