Max Verstappen won the last race in 2020. Not that it helped. Sadly, you can always bet on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to be a dull end to the year. A poor circuit for modern cars. However, that could change as the sport revamps itself for next season. There will be new cars, new rules, new regulations. It’ll really shake things up for those who like to bet on sports in the UK and elsewhere. But glance at the 2021 F1 Drivers Championship odds and spotting the difference is tricky.
The FIA mean well. No really. They do. The addition of the halo that saved Romain Grosjean’s life exists only because they insisted. Indeed when it comes to the safety of the drivers, the FIA do not shirk their responsibilities. They have become good at it. Romain walking away proved that. However, when they attempt to adjust the racing and not just the safety it all goes horribly awry. Their big changes should have altered the 2021 F1 Drivers Championship odds. They haven’t.
The bookies simply don’t believe there will be a sudden massive change to the way F1 races play out. Mercedes will remain the dominant team with the fastest car. No rule changes will counter that superiority. That’s why Lewis Hamilton gets just 4/9 in the 2021 F1 Drivers Championship odds available at online betting sites in the UK like Bet365. There’s simply no indication yet any other team will even come close. A bet on Max Verstappen is going for 5/1. He’s second favorite.

So, whilst you can bet on Ferrari and Red Bull to do the best they can, it probably won’t be enough. Mercedes won’t get any slower, and the rest just aren’t getting any faster. So, you can find a bet on Red Bull or Ferrari going for attractive prices, but don’t be fooled. In individual races they might stand the odd piece of hope, but across what will be a long season? Not a hope. Their 2021 F1 Drivers Championship odds lag massively behind that of even Valtteri Bottas.

Valtteri Bottas will forever be the bridesmaid and never the bride. Oh sure he’ll win a few races here and there when Lewis has poor luck. But a championship? Not a chance. Mercedes simply won’t let that become an option. Not as long as Lewis drives. That’s why the 2021 F1 Drivers Championship odds on Valtteri Bottas are 11/2. You’d have to be mad to take advantage of UK gambling laws to bet on Valtteri Bottas winning the season title. That’s not what Valtteri is for.

The odds on Ferrari pulling their finger out, look slim. Charles Leclerc scrapes a scant 33/1 with Sebastian Vettel adrift at 100/1. Those are not pretty figures. They make a bet on George Russell look fun, and he’s 12/1 without a hope in hell. Absent the Mercedes under him, it’s just not happening for the young Brit. He can show as much promise as he likes, but in a Williams that’s all he can do. His 2021 F1 Drivers Championship odds are simply not in line with any reality.
A Williams could out accelerate a Mercedes, I suspect, but only if you dropped it from a plane. Even then it would be a close run thing. The FIA are hoping their changes make the odds on Mercedes a little longer, the racing a little closer, but they won’t. Online sportsbook sites in the UK like Bet365 know this. That’s why their 2021 F1 Drivers Championship odds favor Hamilton and his magic Mercedes so much. A bet on Mercedes or on Lewis Hamilton is the only sensible bet on F1 next year.
