Defending champion Michael van Gerwen is the favorite

Other top players, like Wright, Price and Aspinall can also win the event
The next PDC darts tournament is the World Grand Prix which is held this week in Coventry, UK. Michael van Gerwen is the defending champion and one of the favorites again in the Darts World Grand Prix odds. Let’s see who else can win the tournament and get the £110,000 prize money.
The first World Grand Prix tournament was organized in 1998, then it moved to Ireland, where Dublin has been hosting the event. This year it will be held in the United Kingdom, in Coventry. Phil Taylor won it the most times, he got 11 titles in the special event where players have to commence and finish each leg with a double. 32 players will take part in the competition, including the top 16 on the PDC Order of Merit. Defending champion Michael van Gerwen is the top seed player, and he has been drawn in the easier path avoiding most of his big rivals. While last year’s other finalist, Dave Chisnall will start against Glen Durrant in the top game of the first round.
Top players are favored in the Darts World Grand Prix odds
Online sportsbooks in the UK offer the smallest odds, 4.33 for the win of Michael van Gerwen. The Dutch three-time world champion still leads the world ranking in spite of having an inconsistent season so far. He won the UK Open in March but since the return of the sport he has also suffered a few defeats. First by Simon Whitlock in the second round of the World Matchplay. Then in the World Series of Darts also in the second round by Glen Durrant. So van Gerwen is not in his best form, he could still win a few events in the Players Championship. It will be interesting to see how he can play in the World Grand Prix where he won his first PDC major title in 2012 and collected four more titles.
His biggest rivals are Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price, both of them have been in great form this year. As we know, Wright won his first world championship title in the beginning of the year. He also won The Masters in February and got to the semi-final of the World Series of Darts. There he lost against Price, who managed to win the event. The Welsh took revenge there for his earlier defeat against Wright in the Players Championship 13. Both favorites will face a tough opponent though at an early stage. Wright will meet the winner of the Chisnall vs Durrant tie, while Price is likely to play against Nathan Apsinall in the second round. Still, their chances of winning are not bad with the odds of 6.00 in the Darts World Grand Prix odds.
Can we see another surprise winner?
This year has been a little bit different though in the world of darts after some surprise wins in the season. First we have to mention Belgian player Dimitri Van den Bergh. He won his first major PDC title, the World Matchplay this year. The two-time World Youth Champion defeated Gary Anderson in the final and can cause another surprise in this event as well. He will start against fourth-seed Michael Smith who is favored to win the tie with the odds of 1.66. While van den Bergh has the odds of 2.20 for the victory.
Another maiden champion is South African Devon Petersen, who won the German Darts Championship a few weeks ago. He became the first African player to win a PDC ranking title after defeating Gerwyn Price and Rob Cross on his route. His victory here would be another surprise but it is not impossible as it’s shown by his odds of 23.00 on bet365.
Online gambling sites in the UK also favor Nathan Aspinall with the odds of 11.00. The 2019 UK Open winner is enjoying a great season so far and has been playing superbly in most tournaments. In the beginning of the year he got to the semi-finals of the world championship and in the Masters. Then after the restart to the quarter-final of the World Series where Price stopped him. He could meet the Welsh in the quarter-final and might take revenge for his earlier defeat.
