The Week in Pictures: July 14 – July 20, 2015

The last seven days have seen a lot of big news stories break so lets quickly review some of the most important that we covered over the last week

In the UK last week the Sun Newspaper (often described as a semi-illiterate rag) published footage of the Queen doing a Nazi salute in the gardens of Balmoral Castle during the 1930s encouraged by her mother and uncle, the then Prince Edward who went on to be Edward VIII. The release of the grainy black and white film has sparked calls for the Royal Family to open their archives and allow the full truth concerning their links with the Third Reich to be made public.

Last week saw services held around the world for the victims of the MH17 plane crash one year after the tragedy that saw all 283 passengers and 15 crew of the Malaysia Airlines flight killed when their Boeing 777 was shot down during the battle for Shakhtarsk Raion in the Ukrainian civil war. Both sides in the conflict still deny any involvement in the incident vehemently blaming each other for firing the Russian-made BUK surface to air missile common to the region that brought the plane down.

Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire on a military recruitment office in Chattanooga last week and then performed a similar attack on a Navy & Marine Reserve Center. Four marines and a Naval petty officer were killed during the incidents with members of law enforcement and the services also wounded. The 24 year old gunman was also killed and whilst links to terrorist organizations like ISIS were not immediately obvious, evidence grew that he was heavily influenced by radical Islam.

In sport the leader of the Tour de France, Britain’s Chris Froome, was assaulted during stage 14 of the race when a cup of urine was thrown in his face just a day after accusations he was using performance enhancing drugs were made by critics of Team Sky and fellow rider Richie Porte claimed he was punched during stage 10. Meanwhile the Easter Island Statue Project, studying the numerous eerie Moai that inhabit the island, have challenged the public perception that the statues were just heads by documenting their digging out of the bodies of some of the ancient sculptures. With a volcanic eruption blamed for burying them up to their necks the excavations have revealed detail carvings on the two figures thus far dug out, although the team, who’ve worked since 2012 on these two, hopes to do the same with the rest of the statues.
