San Jansens sets a new world record on this day with a time of 35.76 sec on 500 meters at the World Sprint Championships in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. On the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo Jansen was the youngest skater and was in fourth place at the 500-meter category. In 1988 a serious tragedy happened to Jansen. His sister died of leukemia on the day when Jansen was scheduled for the 500-meter final race. Jansen was giving in everything to win for the honor of her sister, Jane. Things turned around for Jansen in 1992, December when he was the first man to skate five hundred meters in less than 36 seconds. He was setting a new world record of 35.92, however, he wouldn’t want to stop there. January 30, 1993, he broke the world record again for the sixth time.  1994 on the Lillehammer Winter Olympics he slipped again on the five hundred meter track. However, he was great on the 1,000 meters race. He could finish with 1:12.43, finally bringing home Olympic gold. After this success, he retired from competitive skating.
