2019 Figure Skating Grand Prix Odds: Who Will Win the First Trophy of the Season?

Top figure skaters will meet this Thursday and Friday in Turin, Italy on the Grand Prix Final. It is the season’s first major competition before the European and World Championship, so all big favorites will be there. Let’s see who has the most chances in the 2019 Figure Skating Grand Prix odds. 

Top six-figure skaters with the most points in each discipline have qualified for the final. They could collect points in six different Grand Prix events, which were held in Europe, North America and Asia. The biggest competition is expected in the ladies’ event, where young Russian talents are the main favorites. But hopefully, we can also see clear and entertaining programs from the skaters in other disciplines, the whole competition will be streamed live on YouTube.

In the last few years, ladies’ figure skating has improved enormously, mostly due to Russian skaters. Every year we can see new Russian girls, who can do things, which nobody thought to be possible. At the age of only 14-15, they can do quadruple jumps, just like men, not just one, but 3-4 in a program. It’s a huge improvement compared to a few years ago when even a triple jump was a big achievement from a female skater. And the appearance of new Russian talents are endless, this year we have three new names as top favorites.

Online sportsbooks in Russia are giving the most chances for two of them, Alexandra Trusova and Alena Kostornaya with 2.5 and 2.7 odds. Kostornaya won two Grand Prix events, the ones in France and in Japan. Trusova was the winner of the Canadian and Russian Grand Prix. Amazing performances from the two teenagers, competing in their first senior season. Their program’s difficulty is very similar, there was only one point difference in their best final scores. Whoever handles her nerves better, can be the winner and collect her first major victory.

We find two more Russian skaters in the top six.  Anna Shcherbakova who won the two remaining Grand Prix, Skate America, and the Chinese Cup, and also the Russian Championship. The fourth Russian is not else than an Olympic, World and European champion, Alina Zagitova, whose skating this year was only enough for podium finishes in the Grand Prix series. She can definitely win though with perfect programs.  Her routine and performing ability should be a big help to achieve that.

Men’s event can bring more excitements

Though in the men’s event we only find two big favorites according to the 2019 Figure Skating Grand Prix odds, it should still be an exciting competition. At least that’s what we are expecting from two World champions, Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu and American Nathan Chan. Hanyu is a two-time Olympic champion as well, he was the first skater to do it in 66 years. Unbelievably he has broken the world record 18 times so far and still holds it for the short program.

This season Hanyu won the Grand Prix in Canada and Japan and scored the most points. But his big rival, Nathan Chan is following him closely, winning the French and American events. Chan who was called a jumping machine earlier has improved his performance as well and became a main rival of Hanyu, defeating him last year in the world championship. They will clash for the first time this season at this final, which gives an extra spice to it. His odds are 2.80 for the win, while  Hanyu was given 1.50 at 1xBet.

Favorites in the pairs and ice dance events

Online gambling sites in Russia are predicting a  China vs Russia competition at the pairs event.  The Chinese pair, Sui Wenjing and Han Cong having the smallest odds, 1.55. They are Olympic silver medallists and world champions from 2017 and 2019, but they haven’t won the Grand Prix final yet. Now they have the chance but the young Russian pair of Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitry Kozlovsky will go for the gold medals as well. They are only 17 and 19, so they’ve been mostly competing in junior level so far, but this season they managed to win two Grand Prix events. Now their odds to win the Grand Prix Final is 2.65.

In the ice dance, the picture is more simple. Four-time world champion French pair, Gabrielle Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron are major favorites. Anyone else winning the final would be a huge surprise and would bring a lot of money for lucky betters. Russian and American pairs can be in the podium, but their victories are highly unlikely unless the French are making huge errors.
