The week in pictures: April 21 – April 27, 2015

Big news stories broke almost daily last week so let’s take the time to look back over some of the most salient to hit the headlines over the last seven days

Six police officers in Baltimore have been suspended following the death in custody of yet another black male. Freddie Gray, 25, ran from police after “catching the eye” of a police lieutenant. He was chased down, found to be in possession of a knife, arrested and placed in a police wagon in good health. He then died from a broken neck that left his voice box crushed and his spinal cord 80% severed. This has sparked widespread protests across the city and an investigation continues.

As the the migrant boat crisis in the Mediterranean sea continued EU leaders agreed to triple the amount of funding made available for their naval search and rescue efforts, hoping this will stem the number of deaths amongst those trafficked between North Africa and Europe. Other solutions are still being discussed but the General Secretary of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, has weighed in saying that there is “no military solution” to refugees and migrants drowning, a reference to some suggestions made.

Nepal suffered it’s worst earthquake in over 80 years last week. Centered some 60km east of the capital Kathmandu and registering at 7.8 on the Richter scale, the quake caused widespread damage in the country with the death toll quickly mounting to stand at well over 3,000 people, a number that is expected to increase as rescue and recovery operations reach isolated areas of the mountainous nation. Powerful aftershocks hampered these efforts and caused many residents to camp in open ground rather than to return to their homes.

In sport 20-time champion jockey, AP McCoy retired from racing having guided over 4,300 winners home from the saddle and suffered over 40 broken bones. In his final races at Sandown he was hailed as a hero of the sport and given a guard of honor by his fellow jockeys. Question is, who will be the next champion to take his place? Meanwhile US President Barack Obama once again took to the stage at the annual White House Correspondent’s dinner an event at which it is traditional for numerous inside jokes to be told. Referring to Hillary Clinton as having been reduced to living out of a van in Iowa, and saying his relationship with Joe Biden was so close there were placed in Indiana that wouldn’t serve them pizza any more his thunder was perhaps a little stolen by Luther his “anger translator”.
