When it comes to the world of online gaming, headlines have been absolutely packed with horror stories from Germany lately. Arrests, cheats and scandals have plagued the nation, especially when taking football into consideration. Germany is where the recent international scandal unfolded and first shocked the world. The scandal is still being investigated.

According to German gambling laws, online gambling is currently illegal. Regardless, massive amounts of the population participate in it. They do this by playing on foreign-based online gambling sites where the government has no jurisdiction.

Many Germans believe that the popularity of internet gambling in Germany is one of the factors that made the most current scandal possible. According to experts, however, this is not the case.

The European Sports Security Association (ESSA) detects and reports suspicious gaming and unusual betting patterns and was created to serve this purpose by European online gambling operators. It is as much in gambling operators interest as anyone’s to cut back on cheating being that usually the operators are the ones targeted to take the financial fall.

ESSA Secretary General, Khalid Ali, explained the effectiveness of online gambling at cutting back on such scandals saying: “When the German authorities started to investigate the Hoyzer scandal in 2005, they went to the largest operator at the time, bwin, and asked them how much money they lost. Bwin reported no significant losses due to the fact that actions on the internet are fully traceable.”

Ali went on to explain that internet casinos have security systems that block what seem to be unusually large bets on lower division, and less important matches. The spokesperson for one internet sports book explained that they hadn’t been hurt at all by the current scandal because they “have a risk management system that can block attempts at cheating in their early stages.”

As punters can see, online gambling is significantly more secure for all parties involved. The security systems in place have forced match fixing operations to stick to their land-based roots for any hope at success.
