Graduates vie for to $7, 500 to travel
Each year since its inception in 1918, the Pulitzer Prize Awards has seen the number of its entries into the different categories rise. This year, there are over 2,400 entries that have been submitted with the hope of being awarded 1 of the 21 prizes. With the revelation of synopses of winning books, and samples from winners in drama and music drawing to close, we will delve into some detail about the categories of the Pulitzer Prize Awards. Among the categories meriting awards are Letters, Music and Fellowships and Journalism.
There will be $10,000 in prizes for winners in the Letters category with eligibility restricted to works first published in the United States during the year and made available in hardcover or bound paperback, which can be bought by the public. Prizes will thus be awarded for a distinguished work of fiction by an American author, preferably one which entails American life, for a play by an American author, preferably original in its source and which depicts American life, a ‘distinguished and appropriately documented’ book on the history of the United States. The same goes for a documented biography or autobiography by an American author.
A prize will also go to a distinguished volume of original verse by an American author, and a documented book of non-fiction by an American author that may not be considered in any other category. The Music world will be deemed fit for the Pulitzer for a musical composition by an American that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the year. Finally 4 Fellowships awards, worth $7, 500, will go for outstanding graduates to travel, report and study abroad and one fellowship award of $7,500 will be presented to an outstanding graduate, who wishes to specialize in drama, music, literary, film or television criticism. All graduates are chosen by members of the faculty of the Graduate School of Journalism.
Responsible journalistic reporting a criterion
In the Journalism category alone, there are 14 subcategories with a prize of $10, 000 being awarded to each winner for stories, columns, editorials, photos and cartoons published. These should include a noted example of praiseworthy public service by a newspaper or news site through the use of its journalistic resources, including the use of stories, editorials, cartoons, photographs, graphics, videos, databases, multimedia or interactive presentations or other visual material
A prize will also go to a prominent example of local reporting of breaking news that swiftly captures events accurately as they happen, and, as time passes, shed light, provides context and expands upon the initial coverage. Investigative reporting, using any available journalistic tool will also obtain a prize.
For the funny pages, due consideration is also given by the board as well as by all the online betting fans who read the cartoon or portfolio of cartoons.
These must be characterized by originality, editorial effectiveness, quality of drawing and pictorial effect, published as a still drawing, animation or both that will also nab a prize. The two other categories that online bettors will want to wager on under US gambling laws are those considered as esteemed sample of breaking news photography in black and white or color. These may consist of a photograph or photographs as well as an illustrious specimen of feature photographic imagery in black and white or color, which may incorporate one or more photographs.
In the photography category, a single jury will judge both the Breaking News category and the Feature category. Explanatory reporting illustrating a meaningful and complex subject, which shows comprehension of the subject, distinct writing and clear presentation, will also merit an award. Also being awarded is an outstanding example of reporting on significant issues of local concern, demonstrating originality and community expertise, using any available journalistic tool.
An avid political writer will win the prize for his/her contribution to outstanding reporting on national affairs. An award will each go to acclaimed reporting on international affairs and an example of feature writing which takes into account the quality, originality and concision portrayed in the written material.
Every comment counts too with a commentary piece of work meriting its share of the prizes, as well as one for constructive criticism. As for prestigious editorial writing, that will be judged by its “excellence being clearness of style, moral purpose, substantial reasoning, and power to influence public opinion in what the writer conceives to be the right direction, using any available journalistic tool.” According to the criteria of the Pulitzer prize committee, a reward will be forthcoming.
Broadcast media and their news sites are ineligible
More than 1,100 journalism entries had already been submitted to the Pulitzer digital entry website. These were then reviewed by jurors on computer screens. The entries are made by any individual, based on material coming from a United States newspaper or news site that publishes at least weekly during the calendar year and that adheres to the highest journalistic standards. Magazines and broadcast media, which includes US gambling news and their respective websites, are not allowed to enter. Shame though! Also over 77 editors, publishers, writers, and educators are being convened at the School of Journalism to judge the entries in the 14 journalism categories.
