The Week in Pictures: March 24 – March 31, 2015

With so much going on in the world over the last seven days we take a look back at some of the biggest stories to hit the headlines

The news last week was dominated by the tragic crash of Germanwings flight 4U 9525 in the French Alps that killed all 150 people on board. The Airbus was thought to have been deliberately crashed by its co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, who investigations have found was suffering from severe psychosomatic illness and who himself had predicted to a former girlfriend “One day I’m going to do something that will change the whole system and everyone will know my name and remember.”

The most populous nation in Africa, Nigeria, went to the polls in a presidential election Saturday that was beset with technical problems centered on the new biometric cards that were brought in to reduce voter fraud. Approximately 300 of 150,000 election units were affected by the registration issue and across the country more than 20 people were reported to have been killed in attacks on polling stations and people waiting to vote. The election had already been delayed by six weeks due to Boko Haram.

With the March the 31st deadline rapidly approaching the P5+1 group of nations made a final push towards a deal with Iran over it’s nuclear program despite vocal objections from both the Israelis and right-wing Republicans in the US. Taking a “step by step” approach all parties remained optimistic that a deal can be reached ending international sanctions by ensuring Iran scales back its nuclear research and development. With several core issues still to be settled all sides agreed progress was being made.

In sport Wales beat a 10-man Israeli side in the Sammy Ofer Stadium 3-0 to go top of group B in the qualification run up to Euro 2016. Gareth Bale scored twice in a game that saw Wales play some of it’s best football in years, but will they be able to beat Belgium in June to further their quest to reach the finals of a major tournament for the first time since 1958? Meanwhile police in Jakarta, Indonesia, decided the best way to get rid of 3.3 tonnes of confiscated marijuana was to set fire to it, and whilst the officers concerned were given masks to ward off the effects of the fumes the same cannot be said of the surrounding neighborhood. Local residents complained of dizziness and headaches as the cloud of dope smoke wafted across their homes but were grateful the 2,500 ecstasy pills and 2 kilos of crystal meth also disposed of weren’t on the fire.
