This Week in Pictures: November 07 – 13, 2017

The world was awash with big news stories last week so just in case you missed anything important here’s a quick run down of some of the headlines from around the globe.

In the United States further revelations of sexual misconduct by various celebrities came to light with Richard Dreyfuss, George Takei and Louis CK joining the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Steven Seagal in being accused of hideous behavior. The Republican candidate for the free Senate seat for Alabama, gun totting Judge Roy Moore, was also accused by several women of having inappropriate relationships with them when they were as young as 14. He remains ahead in the polls.

In Asia 45th President of the United States Donald Trump admitted that perhaps one day Kim Jong-un would be his friend, despite the leader of the free world feeling it necessary to tweet out a response to the continued use of the insult “Dotard”, meaning old and feeble, by the North Korea leader saying “Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old’? When I would never call him ‘Short & Fat’?” This was considered by many observers to be a sarcastic response, although this cannot be proven.

In the Middle East the Lebanese Prime Minister who resigned under slightly mysterious circumstances whilst in Saudi Arabia, Mr Saad Hariri, and whose return to Lebanon was demanded by his own party, last week admitted he will return home within days. Although he blame Hezbollah threats against his family for his resignation cabinet colleagues have not so readily accepted this explanation as regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran square off with each other in the proxy battlefields of the Bekka Valley.

In sports Marc Marquez won his fourth MotoGP world championship as the challenger from Ducati Andrea Dovizioso had any hope of a miracle in the last race of the season at Valencia wiped out when he went off the track after a frustrating time behind team mate Lorenzo. The only question now is can the Spaniard go on to win a fifth title next year and will Dovi want to race with Lorenzo again? Meanwhile in the United States a physicist at the California Institute of Technology, Sean Carroll, has claimed in Scientific American that there is no possibility of a life after death, whatever various religions might have to say on the subject because, “Claims that some form of consciousness persists after our bodies die and decay into their constituent atoms faces one huge insuperable obstacle: the laws of physics underlying everyday life are completely understood. There’s no way within those laws to allow for the information stored in our brains to persist after we die.” So that’s that then. Oh well.
