Sports Betting in Sweden
All legal sports betting in Sweden is controlled by a state monopoly, and is divided among two companies. The first, Travoch Galopp, runs the horse racing industry in the country. The second, Svenska Spel, controls all other sports gambling, as well as the country's lotteries, casinos, and most forms of online gambling. Svenska Spel offers nearly a dozen different types of sports bets, including several lottery-style games, and fixed-odds bets through their wide range of Oddset games. Oddset covers 15 sporting events, and is becoming increasingly popular throughout Sweden.

Foreign companies, along with private Swedish companies, have long tried to gain a foothold on the Swedish sportsbook industry. Unibet, Sweden's largest private sportsbook operator, has been battling against Svenska Spel's monopoly for a decade. The EU is pressuring the Swedish government to break up Svenska Spel, but it doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon.

Online sports betting is also available in Sweden. The only legal provider of online sports wagers in Sweden is Svenska Spel. Most of their sports betting games can be played on their website, including the popular Oddset games.

Foreign operators have tried to infiltrate the world of Swedish online sportsbooks but continue to face resistance from the Swedish government. Ladbrokes, Unibet, Expect, and Betsson all had offices in Sweden a few years ago, and even offered internet sports betting to Swedish players, but they have been driven away. Today, a few large international sportsbooks still cater to Swedish players, but these are fewer than there were five years ago.
