Sports Betting in South Korea
Before 1997, all gambling in South Korea, with the exception of betting horse, boat and bicycle races was banned. Horse racing is experiencing a revival in Asia, which can also be felt at the three major racecourses in South Korea.

The introduction of SportsToto in 1997, offering both fixed odds bets and running odds bets, expanded the range of events covered by the six most popular professional sports in South Korea: Football, Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Golf, and Ssireum (traditional Korean wrestling). Today, Sports Toto terminals are found all around the country, but there is no online presence. Players can purchase tickets through these machines and bet on the outcome of various sporting events. A portion of all revenue the system draws is given to sports facilities in the country.

Even with all of this variety available to South Korean punters, Sports Toto only accounts for 10% of all lottery revenue in the country, while bets on horse, bicycle, and motor racing account for 60% of the total.


Online Sports Betting in South Korea
South Korea has no online sportsbooks or any other way to bet on sports events using the internet. In fact, they have no internet gambling sites at all, because the government does not issue licenses for offering online gambling services. The only way South Koreans can place sports wagers over the internet is through foreign sportsbooks.

The government of South Korea does not want its citizens using foreign online sportsbooks or other internet gambling sites, but there is not much they can do about it. They simply have no jurisdiction in the countries where the sites are hosted. While most foreign internet sportsbooks are in English, a few are offered in Korean, and many accept South Korean players.
