Poker games are very hard to come by in Brazil. The game has been growing in popularity during the last decade, but the real problem is that there are no casinos or poker halls in Brazil. This is because casino gambling is illegal in the country, and has been since the 1960s. Instead, poker games in Brazil take place at poker "associations". These groups even hold large-scale tournaments like the Brazilian Series of Poker. They are careful to work around the existing laws so the tournaments are not closed down.

Online poker is a good way for players to enjoy poker in Brazil. The government doesn't allow Brazilian internet poker websites to operate, but they don't do much to prevent players from using foreign online poker sites. Poker websites hosted in other countries are out of the Brazilian government's reach, so players can use foreign poker rooms without fear of them being shut down. While most of these international sites are in English, a few do offer Portuguese translations of their website and software.
