Poker in Argentina Poker is easy to find in Argentina. There are more than 80 casinos spread across the country, with a large concentration of them in and around Buenos Aires. Many of these large casinos offer fifty or more tables along with hundreds of slots and other gaming machines. Nearly all of them offer at least one type of poker game, and many have several different varieties available. Poker tournaments can also be found in Argentina. The biggest is the PokerStars Latin America Poker Tour, which will be stopping in Mar del Plata in April 2009 to host the Grand Final. Despite the $5,200 buy-in, the tournament is expected to bring in 600 players.
Online Poker in Argentina Online poker in Argentina is also quite popular. The Argentine government gives licenses to casino operators that let them run internet gambling websites. The first was the Casino Sur which went live in 2002. While Argentine players used to be able to play online poker at foreign poker rooms, these were banned in 2008 – only sites licensed in Argentina are legal now. Internet providers can be punished for letting these foreign sites through to Argentine players, but players themselves cannot be punished, so they continue to use foreign online poker sites. As of March 2009, the government of Argentina is considering reversing this ban on foreign online gambling websites.
