Although Spanish gambling laws make it legal to operate mobile casinos, no domestic offers have hit the market since the June 2012 legalization. The same prohibition on offering slots that is in place regarding online establishments also applies to mobile casinos, which explains some of the delay.

Although Spain has 44 licensed online gambling operators, only one (!) of them – namely PokerStars - offers mobile poker play. At least 2 mobile casinos are also in the pipeline, awaiting the lifting of the slots prohibition.

Because of the virtually non existent domestic offer, especially when it comes to progressive jackpot slots (or any slots), Spanish players still visit many foreign mobile casinos.

The nominal mobile penetration rate approaches 130% in Spain, with four network operators - Movistar (45%), Vodafone (30%), Orange (23%), Yoigo (7%) – covering most of the market.

Spaniards lead the rest of Europe when it comes to smartphone use, as 7 out of 10 of them expected to possess at least one such device by the end of 2013. The operating systems are overwhelmingly dominated by Android (80%), with all other platforms left in the dust.

Because of the wide availability of portable devices as well as the lack of true domestic offers, hundreds of thousands of Spanish players visit foreign mobile casinos.
