Bad news for Australian punters as the renowned sports betting operator with world-wide reputation and years of experience, William Hill, stops its operations of online sportsbooks in Australia.

The move is rumored to have been caused by the stringent process around the Nevada gaming license application for the bookie. In order to better comply with the requirements, William Hill decided to put a halt on its Australian operations.

A part of Australian gambling laws – the Australian Interactive Gambling Act 2001 – denotes offering of poker and casino games to the country’s players as a punishable activity, and William Hill certainly walked a very fine line Down Under.

Anti-gambling activists, including Nick Xenophon, are jumping for joy as yet another big name in international sports betting withdraws from the country much to the distress of faithful punters.

The news was reported by Sporstbook Review (SBR) publication. Australia gambling news quotes an email from William Hill to its members printed in SBR: "Following previous communications, please be advised that we have taken the decision to withdraw our Sports betting service for any customer registered in Australia.”

The email goes on to say: “Any real cash funds held in your account will now appear in your main William Hill account and you can arrange withdrawal of these funds through the “My Account” section of our site."

Apparently, the management of William Hill has already confirmed the exit from Australian market in the interview with SBR.
