Seven down, two to go – Belgium casino licenses are running out
Considering the relatively short time since online gambling was legalized in the country (at the start of 2011), the Belgium casino scene is thriving with newly licensed operators.
Although nowhere near the level activity seen in some classic offshore and tribal licensing jurisdictions, having a new operator entering the market in each quarter is pretty good for a country with a population of 11 million.
In fact, one may begin to wonder whether any additional online casino Belgium decides to license would not be more than what the market can support. Of course this was also taken into consideration when the country developed its licensing rules, capping the available Belgian internet casino permits at nine.
According to Belgian gambling laws there are three license categories: in addition to A+ there are also B+ (gaming arcades) and F1+ (wagers). Of the latter two types 180 and 34 may be issued, respectively.
With the recent addition of Bwin there are already seven A+ license holders allowed to operate casino games and online poker sites in Belgium, so two more permits can be granted before the gates close.
The current A+ licensed operators are Bwin, Casino777, JackpotParty, Partouche, PokerStars,
Unibet and Win2Day. They are all registered on the .be domain.
