India Gets Sports Integrity Unit to Fight Betting Corruption

Authorities have set up a “Sport Integrity Unit” which will help investigate betting and sporting fraud.

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is intensifying the battle against sports fraud by setting up a new “Sports Integrity Unit” which helps police officers in their investigations.

In recent gambling news, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha explained: “The objectives of this unit include investigating and inquiring into matters related to sports fraud, combating malpractices in sports and coordinating with sports federations and law enforcement agencies.”

“This would make India one of the very few nations in the world to have a dedicated unit set up as a part of its federal investigative agency to investigate sports fraud,” he added.

Preventing sports fraud

With so many scandals in the world of sports, some countries have taken steps to prevent betting fraud. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Australian Federal Police and certain European countries are already using such units and New Delhi authorities are also increasing efforts to make sure Indian gambling laws are fully respected.

Before setting up the new system, the CBI discussed it with the International Cricket Council and Federation Internationale de Football Association.

“In the years to come, we shall further strengthen the unit and hope to make a substantial contribution in the fight against malpractices in sports. We look forward to support and cooperation from all stakeholders in making this initiative a success,” Sinha added.
