Casinos in Slovenia There are no casinos in Slovenia that are more than a few decades old. This is because for many years, up until 1989, casinos were not legal. Then, in the early 1990s as Slovenia was undergoing internal change after the Soviet occupation, casinos began to open up around the country. They went unregulated until 1995, when the Slovenian government passed the Gambling Act.
Today, there are about 20 casinos found throughout Slovenia. Most of these are small, with just a few tables and machines to offer. The largest casinos in Slovenia are located in and around Nova Gorcia, a city that calls itself "The Las Vegas of Slovenia". The city is located near the border of Italy, and its casinos cater to Italian gambling tourism, which makes up one quarter of the nation's tourist industry. These casinos, and many others in the country, are operated by the state-owned HIT Enterprise. HIT is scheduled to open three more major casinos in 2009.
Online Casinos in Slovenia There are no Slovenian online casinos today – at least there are none that are actually hosted in Slovenia. The laws regarding gambling on the internet are unclear, so the topic remains a grey area in the law. One thing that remains clear is that the Slovenian government does not offer licenses to host online casinos from within Slovenia, so all internet casinos that are in the Slovenian language are foreign casinos catering to players in Slovenia.
There are currently no plans to legalize online gambling in Slovenia. If the government does decide to open up to internet gambling, HIT and other major casino operators will likely take advantage of the situation. But until such changes occur, Slovenians wanting to gamble at online casinos must be content playing at foreign sites.
