Gambling in Canada
The gambling industry in Canada has had a rocky history. Like in most places, gambling started off being legal, but a law was made to prohibit gambling in all forms back in 1892. Over the years, the law became more and more relaxed. From 1900, casual raffles and bingo were allowed for charitable events. Ten years later, Canadians could bet on horse races again. Then, after a long slow period, gaming machines were legalized in 1985. Casinos started to appear a few years later, and gambling started to increase in popularity.

The Canadian government does not give out licenses for companies to operate internet casinos, so all "Canadian" gambling sites are actually hosted elsewhere.
